Dear Lexi,
I say Dear Lexi, but I should be saying Dear “Weckleson” since that’s the only name you like to go by these days. Your personality is larger than life. You amaze me with your sweet sense of humor and facial expressions that just add to the constant giggles you give us.
We had a pretty exciting week. The kids came home from summer in California and the next day we had to be at the hospital at 5:30 am to see if your finger needed pinned. There I go getting ahead of myself again.
About two weeks ago we went on our daily visit to see grandma in the rehab hospital. She had a pretty brutal battle with pneumonia and had to go to rehab to get her strength back so she could walk again. While we were there you got in a fight with a door and the door won. Your finger nail was ripped from where it grows and off the bottom 1/2 of your nail bed. The bed was ripped in 2 and flopped back and the bone snapped at the tip. We took you to the ER where they used the nail as a biological band aid and stitched everything back together. We were referred to an orthopedic surgeon.
When we saw the surgeon a few days later they put you in a pretty purple (aka Go Rockets!π) cast and told you to be back in two weeks. When we returned at the two week mark they decided to sedate you to get the stitches removed because you were traumatized to the point you don’t want anybody touching your arm. They also figured they would x-ray it then so they could put the pin in if it was needed.
Good news first. Everything with the sedation went well. They got the stitches out and you didn’t need a pin. You were VERY CRANKY when you woke up and kept crying that you wanted your daddy. Unfortunately, Daddy is in Germany for work so you settled with love from Libby, Mark, Sam and Miley. My love wasn’t helping anything. I’m so happy and thankful that you and your sibling have such tight knit relationships with each other. I pray that you all nurture those relationships and continue to be so close throughout your lives.
Bad news. Apparently after our last visit the doctor researched Maffucci syndrome. There isn’t much reliable information online about it since there’s less than 200 cases of it world wide. I am assuming he read journals and reviewed your x-Rays. He was shocked to find out that you aren’t closely followed by an orthopedic doctor already. Apparently the spots in your bones that we were told were weak spots are actually tumors. Don’t ask what they’re called specifically because I don’t remember. He did say that they seem to be benign, but wants you to come in to get some full body scans done so we have a good base to go from and review every couple years to be sure that the benign tumors don’t become malignant.
When he told me this I started to cry. I mean we sat through hours of genetic counseling and saw and heard all the awful things that could happen, but nobody mentioned we should have this followed too. I guess it does make sense because they scan your pelvic and abdominal region as a safe guard so why wouldn’t they follow your bones too. Bone cancer was on the long list of things we should be vigilant about watching. We were told that if you had odd bumps or persistent pain from your bones to get checked. I tend to like doctors who take a more conservative approach especially when it comes to my sweet girl.
I am not going to lie, this stirred up a lot of fears and emotions that had began to settle. I can’t imagine a world without you in it and that is certainly not something I ever want to have to experience. You are simply amazing. You make me a better person. We are so in love with you Weckleson.
Love you to the moon and back baby girl. Infinity times infinity,
Mom
XOXO
